Ethelbert White (1891 – 1972)

One of the most Bohemian of artists, Ethelbert White (and his beloved wife Betty) led the life of a Romany. His work evinces a passion for landscape. In 1911 and 1912 he studied at St John’s Wood School of Art, first achieving success as an engraver and designer for the Beaumont Press. His early exhibitions included the London group and the New English Art Club, and he was regularly shown at the Royal Academy. In 1979 the Fine Art Society presented a retrospective of his work, which is also held at the V & A and the Tate Gallery.
