Dick Romyn's 'Ship of Fools' is one of his strongest, and almost certainly most personal, works. Born in London, Romyn studied in Amsterdam, Vienna and Geneva before becoming a hero in World War II. He studied at the London Polytechnic under John Minton. He moved to Rome and then to Paris where he immersed himself in what Kitaj named 'the second and third schools', but settled in London in the mid 1950s. In Britain, Romyn struggled to find understanding for his central European influenced work. A sale of his paintings recently identified them as 'a winding path between the bleak and the romantic'. 'The Ship of Fools' powerfully and movingly suggests an allegory of a journey through the artist's life.
