The Lepidopterist
The Lepidopterist

Evan Charlton (British, 1904 – 1984)

After training at the Slade, Evan Charlton’s working life was spent in his home country of Wales, as head of the Cardiff School of Art and later as Schools Inspector for Art in Wales and England. His links with the Surrealist movement were apparent but mostly uncharted, and it was only after leaving regular employment that he became a full-time painter. His output was quite small – only three or four paintings a year – and many are distinguishable by their rocky landscapes and fragmented statuary. His work is to be found in the Tate Gallery, the National Museum of Wales and the Imperial War Museum.
