Anthony Benjamin (British, 1931 – 2002)

The printer, painter and sculptor Anthony Benjamin was born in 1931 and moved from training as a scientific engineer to studying with Leger in Paris, followed by five years at the Regent Street Polytechnic from 1951. The award of French and Italian scholarships allowed extensive foreign study, including a period with Stanley William Hayter at Atelier 17 in Paris. He established himself as a St Ives artist from 1955, when he moved between Cornwall and Paris, and from 1961 worked extensively throughout the world as a lecturer, returning to London in 1973, and settling in North Norfolk for the last ten years of his life. A member of the Royal Society of Painter-Printmakers, and a Fellow of the Royal Society of Arts, he died in February 2002.
